Kentang collection stems from Ong Cen Kuang’s love of handmade paper. His first rule of thumb is to work on hand directly with banana paper, have a sense of the nature of the banana paper, understand its character, and manipulate it without losing the intrinsic character of the paper.
As a decorative lighting designer, his objective first and foremost is the light quality. He is interested in how the light is diffused through layers of paper when they are layered and placed perpendicularly to the light source, resulting in depth of various light qualities, warmth and the irregular undulating edges of the paper add a sense of broken symmetry to the pieces.
The paper of the Kentang collection is made by hand locally in Bali by paper artisan, using banana trunks from their own garden. These papers then are paired with oxidized and beaten finished copper as structures.
